According to the China State Railway Group, by 2025 China's high-speed rail had reached more than fifty thousand kilometres. All of the country's railways together come to 165,000 kilometres.

Those fifty thousand kilometres are roughly two thirds of all the high-speed rail in the world. Every other country put together still has less than China.

China's high-speed rail did not begin long ago. The first line is called the Beijing–Tianjin Intercity, which opened in August 2008. It runs from Beijing to Tianjin, only 120 kilometres. That year, Beijing held the Olympic Games.

From that time to now, in eighteen years, high-speed rail grew from 120 kilometres to fifty thousand kilometres.

The country now has thirty-four provincial-level areas, and thirty-one of them already have high-speed rail. The three that still do not are places with high mountains and long roads, where building is very hard.

China's fastest high-speed train is called the Fuxing; it can run 350 kilometres in one hour. According to the China State Railway Group, it is the fastest train in the world today that runs on a regular daily schedule.

For example, Beijing to Shanghai is over 1,300 kilometres, only four and a half hours by high-speed train. The same route takes more than ten hours by car.

There is one thing many people do not know: China's high-speed trains do not run at night. Every day from midnight to six in the morning, there are no trains on the line.

Railway workers call this period the 'skylight'. These six hours are used to inspect and repair the railway.

At night people go out onto the line, check the rails, check the wires, and leave before dawn. Trains running 350 kilometres an hour rely on this stretch of time that no one sees.

Buying a ticket is easy now. According to 12306, a foreigner can buy a ticket with a passport and scan that passport when entering the station, no longer needing to exchange it for a paper ticket at the station.

For people who travel by train, these changes are useful: places that once took a whole day by plane and car are now just a few hours away.

For foreign students studying in China, there is one more good thing: at the weekend they can take the high-speed train to see another city and still come back Sunday evening in time for class.

According to the China State Railway Group, more than 2,000 kilometres of new high-speed line will be built this year. Under the national plan, by 2030 the country's high-speed rail is to grow to sixty thousand kilometres. Whether it will get there remains to be seen.

It’s quiet in here… suspiciously quiet. Say something 👀
