Frugal all week, generous on Saturday

Young Chinese spending habits are often described these days as simply frugal. That is only half right.

tóngrénnéngzhōngdàifànwǎnshangquèmǎizhāngbǎikuàideyǎnchūpiàozhōngguówǎngshàngzhèjiànshìzǒngjiéchéngliùgāishěngshěnggāihuāhuā

The same person may bring lunch from home and then pay eight hundred yuan for a concert ticket that evening. The Chinese internet has summed this up in six characters: save where you should, spend where you should.

It is not a contradiction, it is a sorting. Necessities are counted carefully; the things you love are paid for fast.

The necessities side has some very typical examples. Coffee is one: a cup used to be thirty-something yuan, and now the 9.9-yuan chains are everywhere — plenty of people have one a day and still call it cheap.

Another word is píngtì — the affordable substitute. If you cannot afford a brand, you find something that works about as well for half the price. There are online communities devoted to nothing else.

The spending side is even more visible. The live performance market has grown for years, taking in more than fifty billion yuan a year in ticket sales. People ride the high-speed train for hours to another city for one concert and come back the same day.

Travel works the same way. A couple of years ago the phrase "special forces tourism" appeared: students leave on Friday night, do three cities in two days, sleep cheaply, and still see everything they came for.

And there is a newer direction: buying the liking itself. Anime merchandise, cards and figures have grown very fast, under the nickname "goods economy". Nobody buying them is short of objects; they are after the feeling.

Hence the label some put on 2026 spending: the experience economy. Fewer things bought, no fewer things done.

For anyone selling, this matters. Cheap does not necessarily move; worth it does. The same customers will change supermarkets to save three yuan and queue two hours for something they have wanted for a long time.

zhèmiànyǒuràngréndānxīndefāngrénqiándōuhuāzàiyànshàngshuōmíngduìjiāngláimǎijiàn——fángzichēzi——jīngbàotàiwàngleshěngxiàlaideqiánduōjiùzàishěngzheděngtiān

There is a worrying reading too. Someone spending on experiences instead is often someone who has stopped expecting the big purchases — a flat, a car. The savings would not add up anyway, so why keep waiting for that day.

xuézhōngwénderénliúshuōzhízhízhōngguórénmǎidōngxi西qiánchángchángxiānzàixīnliwènzhèsān——shiguìguìshìzhízhízhèliǎngwènyàng

One phrase for learners to notice: zhí bù zhí — is it worth it. Chinese shoppers often ask themselves those three characters before buying, rather than "is it expensive". They are not the same question.
