Every year, from 1 to 7 October, China takes its National Day holiday. In those seven days a huge number of people travel across the country — more than seven hundred million in recent years.

The first of October is National Day. On that day in 1949 the People's Republic of China was founded.

zhègechángjiàgòngtiānjiājiàohuángjīnzhōu

This long holiday lasts seven days, and everyone calls it Golden Week.

Where do the seven days come from? The state holiday is really only three days. The other four are moved over from the two weekends on either side. This method is called tiáoxiū.

So before or after Golden Week there is often a Saturday people have to work. Many foreigners find this very strange the first time they see it.

During these seven days almost the whole country is on the move. On the roads, at the stations and at the airports, there are people everywhere.

For these seven days the motorways charge no toll, so far more people drive. It sounds like a good thing, but it often works out like this: a driver saves a hundred yuan in tolls but then spends three more hours stuck on the road.

Train tickets are hard to get too. On 12306, tickets usually go on sale fifteen days before departure, and for the places many people want to reach they are gone in a few minutes.

People who miss out still have an option. 12306 has a waitlist: once you are in the queue, if someone returns a ticket it is bought for the next person waiting. When tickets have genuinely sold out, this is very useful.

The most crowded places are the sights. At places like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and West Lake there are so many people that you can only shuffle along with the crowd; even stopping to take a photo is not easy.

suǒguòhěnduōfāngderénchángchángshuōhuángjīnzhōuyàoyǒumíngdefāng

So people who have travelled a lot often say: during Golden Week, don't go to the famous places.

In recent years a new phrase has appeared: reverse tourism. It means going to small cities nobody has heard of, where there are fewer people, rooms are cheap and you don't queue to eat. This is how many people first heard of small cities like Zibo and Tianshui.

There is an even simpler way to spend it: don't go anywhere. Sleep at home, read, visit family, and go out on the eighth day once everyone else is back.

guòhěnduōderénbānhuìzhèyàngzuòshítiānqiánjiùmǎihǎopiàozuìyǒumíngdejǐngdiǎnzàishangduōliúdiǎnshíjiān

Experienced travellers usually do this: buy their tickets a full fifteen days ahead, skip the most famous sights, and leave plenty of extra time for the journey.

Why is Golden Week so hectic? Because almost the whole country takes its holiday in the very same week. Whether there will be another way in the future is still hard to say.

It’s quiet in here… suspiciously quiet. Say something 👀
